Functional and robust state-machine design for operation on low-voltage DC networks

Flanders Make is involved for some years already in the design, construction and operation of innovative DC (Direct-Current) architectures for industrial and transportation applications. Following several successful research projects, an application for a grant for the development of an infrastructure dedicated to this field of research is going to be submitted at the Flemish government institutes.

This infrastructure encompasses the creation of a modular, transportable and scalable DC grid supporting various bus-voltage levels, loads and sources, simulation routines, energy storage solutions while providing a safe, state-of-the-art environment to accelerate the pace of research and development.

In the scope of this project, many technical challenges and developments await. One among them is, the design of a functional and robust state-machine for operation on low-voltage (0 – 1500 VDC) DC networks. The state-machine dictates how a DC load (e.g., a motor inverter assembly) is connected to a live DC grid, supported by local measurements, pre-charging circuit and taking into account higher-level signals such as setpoints, load sharing, safety state …

The expectations of this challenge are to develop the state-machine in a PLC environment using OOP (object-oriented programming) methodologies for reusability and flexibility, to design a test circuit (hardware assembly) from source to load with all the required elements to operate it properly and safely and to provide visual feedback to the operators (HMI development). The main objective is to demonstrate functionality and robustness of the designed solution of the challenge.
