MODELING AND EXPERIMENTAL VALIDATION OF AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE DRIVETRAIN WITH IN-WHEEL E-MOTORS

FLANDERS MAKE Flanders Make is the strategic research centre for the manufacturing industry. Our mission is to strengthen the long-term international competitiveness of the Flemish manufacturing industry. That’s why we work together with SMEs and large companies on pre-competitive, industry-driven technological research, resulting in concrete product and production innovation in the vehicle industry, the manufacturing industry, and production environments.

GOAL OF THE INTERNSHIP The cooling system of our electric vehicle, used for the Flanders Make Research, needs an improvement. The approach for this improvement is intended to start with the modeling of the current system behavior and performance, to then evaluate a set of design changes including the selection of the most optimal design change in relation to performance and cost. The next step will be the implementation of this design change in the vehicle, whereafter the performance of the system is re-evaluated. Together with this, the model accuracy before and after the design change is evaluated.

The goals of this master thesis are the following:

-The thermal modeling of the reference cooling system in MATLAB/Simulink. -The validation of the model by performing tests with the vehicle. These tests need to be developed in the master thesis and must be representative for real driving behavior and model accuracy assessment. Also execute the tests. -Propose design changes based on the performance, cost and technical integration in the vehicle. Also select the optimal design change. -Integration of the design change in the vehicle. Flanders Make will provide the necessary support. -Evaluate the performance of the reference system by the validated model. Repeat the evaluation for the system after the design change. Also the accuracy of the model must be assessed. -The results must include the actual detailing of the design change. -Additionally, more innovative concepts can be studied, where the cooling system performance is evaluated, using oil as a medium.

Learning target: you will learn

how to model the cooling system of an electric drivetrain and how a state of the art cooling system works. The work will be both on theoretical and practical level, which will allow you to learn how theory and practice are linked to each other in the context of electric vehicle drivetrains and so get a hands on experience.

PRACTICAL DATA -OR Thesis: to be performed before June 2024 -OR Internship: to be performed before June 2024 of min. 4 months to maximum 6 months. FOR INTERNS - Activities take place at the offices of Flanders Make located in Lommel and Leuven, Belgium.
