Benchmarking ARM Cortex vs RISCV

NXP Semiconductors provides High Performance Mixed Signal and Standard Product chips/IC’s to deliver secure connections for a smarter world.

The NXP Product Line Personal Health, headquartered in Leuven, develops application specific IC’s for use in “Hearing Aids and Implants” and “Personal Health monitoring” applications. Next to IC’s, we develop, maintain and support silicon IP (CoolFlux DSP).

This work is planned for a 6 weeks full-time internship at NXP Leuven.

Subject of the internship:

Most of the chips developed by NXP PL Personal Health features one or more ARM Cortex processors. ARM cores are very popular in the industry, well known, well supported by different tool vendors and come with a lot of handy debug functionalities. On the other hand, NXP has developed its own offer of microcontroller cores and compilers based on the RISC-V instruction set.

The purpose of the internship is to compare the ARM Cortex architecture and features with the RISC-V developed by NXP to see if a replacement could be considered and what it would cost in terms of extra design and integration. Both the hardware, software and debugging aspects must be considered. The student will have the possibility to run RTL simulation of the RISC-V core and compile existing programs with the RISC-V compiler.

Tasks: • Learn about micro-controller and how they are used in the architecture of an IC. • Understand the ARM Cortex architecture. • Understand the NXP RISC-V architecture. • Compare hardware features. • Compare instruction set and special software features. • Learn how to use the software tools. • Investigate how to replace an ARM Cortex by NXP RISC-V in an existing chip. • Write a report and make a presentation of the results.

Profile of the student : You study electrical engineering, nano-technology or information technology. You are knowledgeable about digital IC and micro-controllers. You are creative and like hands-on work. You have good communication and English language skills.

Work environment : You have the opportunity to work in a fully equipped high tech environment. You will be coached by experienced engineers. Your location is mainly NXP Leuven; a part of the work can be done remotely.
