Automated Extraction of power dissipation numbers for on-Chip IP implementations

Introduction NXP Semiconductors provides High Performance Mixed Signal and Standard Product chips/IC’s to deliver secure connections for a smarter world. The NXP Product Line Personal Health, headquartered in Leuven, develops application specific IC’s for use in “Hearing Aids and Implants”- and “Personal Health monitoring” applications. Next to IC’s, we develop, maintain and support silicon IP (CoolFlux).

This work is planned for a 6 weeks full-time internship at NXP.

Motivation Personal Health is specialized in low power implementation of DSP and IP’s. The goal of the topic is to develop a toolset that extracts and monitors the main IP implementation Key Performance Indicator’s (KPI). The analysis of those KPI’s allows a RTL designer to monitor and implement necessary features at early stage of the design and to keep an IP power efficient. This will also give a reference to an SOC implementation.

Work

Student will work on an existing design to develop the toolset. The IP that will be used is a previous implemented DSP design. The EDA toolset will be Synopsys/or Cadence based under linux environment.

The student will mainly contribute to the following activities:

  1. Definition of the main KPI’s (synthesis and layout related)
  2. Run the synthesis of this IP
  3. Develop a tool set that parse, report and analyze the main synthesis key performance indicator.
  4. Run a layout of this IP
  5. Develop the same tool set that parse, report and analyze the layout main KPI’s
  6. Implement an automated framework based on Jenkins and python scripting to plug and play the toolset to any IP

Student will get hands-on practical experience of our IC design flow and will have opportunity to learn RTL and physical design concepts which are crucial in any low power IC design process flow.
