Create a modular, board agnostic IC validation platform

Introduction NXP Semiconductors provides High Performance Mixed Signal and Standard Product chips/IC’s to deliver secure connections for a smarter world. The NXP Product Line Personal Health, headquartered in Leuven, develops application specific IC’s for use in “Hearing Aids and Implants”- and “Personal Health monitoring” applications. Next to IC’s, we develop, maintain and support silicon IP (CoolFlux).

This work is planned for a 6 weeks full-time internship at NXP.

Motivation The goal of the topic is to enhance the capability of existing validation/verification platform that is currently in use at NXP. The validation platform, consists of two parts: an FPGA platform including an MCU plus a set of peripherals controlling the Device-Under-Test (DUT), and its python counterpart to control this FPGA environment.

Work The student will work on an existing FPGA platform, named CRISP, and will mainly contribute to the following activities:

  1. Descriptor ROM (Read-Only-Memory)
    • Enable scripts to generate a system descriptor ROM
    • Modify board drivers to dynamically load the drivers based on descriptors
  2. SEB (silicon evaluation board) configuration
    • Create a CRISP configuration for the SEB
    • Create a more flexible Switch-Matrix (SWM) (and optionally integrate test pattern generator module)
  3. Make an FTDI driver to download the FPGA image (for in system FPGA updates)

The student will get hands-on practical experience on our validation/verification flow and will have the opportunity to learn RTL design concept, FPGA and IC validation concepts which are crucial in any IC design process flow.
